Color Story: Blue

Many cultures regard the color blue as significant to their religious beliefs, as it brings peace and keeps bad spirits away. I find the color blue to be calming, however, too much blue in one space causes one to feel sadness and depression. (ABOVE) Blue makes a bold statement in this space. From the walls to the accessories, interior designer Todd Romano went all out. I like the bold choice, I find the large windows to make the room feel very light, despite the darker hue. (BELOW 1) Here blue is used as an accent color, in the lamp, curtains, wallpaper, etc. I like how interior designer Kimberly Ayres, had the flowers on the wallpaper transition from light blue to dark blue  (BELOW 2) I love the sudden hint of blue in the painting. The blue figure is impeccable, it strikes a strong yet delicate pose. In addition, the wood table supporting the objects creates a beautiful contrast with the walls. You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.
Using Blue with Other Colors (by About.com):
  • Mix the color of blue with green for a natural, watery palette.
  • Add gray for understated elegance. Light brown, tans, or beige are environmentally friendly color combinations.
  • Throw in a dash of blue to cool down a hot red or orange scheme.
  • Grab attention with the contrast of blue and yellow
  • Dark blue or navy with white is fresh, crisp, and nautical.
  • Red, white, and blue is a patriotic color trio for many countries, including the United States.
  • Use dark blue with metallic silver accents for an elegantly rich appearance.
