Person Of Influence: Joan Miró

Joan Miró was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist that was born in Barcelona in 1893. Miró's work has been described as Surrealist and Dada, an avant-garde art movement, that took place in Europe in the early 20th century. Miró wanted to "assassinate" painting. (ABOVE) "The Ladder Of Escape" was painted by Miró in 1968. I'd describe this painting as abstract and not so much Surrealist.  I really like the different "punches" of color and variations in thicker and thiner line weights. (BELOW 1) "Bleu II" is an abstract oil panting that was painted in 1961. The painting is the middle part of a three-part display of paintings, which is known as a triptych. Modern paintings like this, by Miró conveyed his dreams and subconscious. (BELOW 2) "The Farm" was painted between 1921 and 22. This oil painting is an example of a Magical Realism. It was purchased by Earnest Hemingway as a birthday present for his wife. The painting is an inventory of the farmhouse owned by his family. (BELOW 3) "The Tilled Field" is an oil painting, painted in 1923. The painting is a perfect example of Miró's surrealist work. This painting is a complex arrangement of objects and figures, it is Miró's first surrealist masterpiece, currently hanging in the Guggenheim. What do you think of Miró's work?

Neil Krug's Mirrors

Neil Krug is a Los Angeles based artist who has art directed campaigns for different bands. Neil Krug's "Mirrors" art collection, takes one into a different world when being viewed. A surrealist world that causes one to question reality. (ABOVE) The mirrors blend into the landscape. I love the contrast of the rigid mountains and smooth mirrors. (BELOW 1) In this piece you can see different views of the bird and its wings. The bird stands out in this piece because of the reflection. (BELOW 2) When I first saw this piece I thought of Ice Cream! Is it weird that this piece makes me hungry? (BELOW 3) The way that this composition is arranged makes it appear that the mountains are closing in on the mirrors. If you look closely at the left mirror you'll notice that the mountains don't stop at the mirror but appear that they continue around. (BELOW 4) Here the mirrors create a city. Kind of looks like a skyline! What do you think?

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's eclectic mix of styles

The way the furniture is positioned adds to the space's eclectic feel. My favorite piece in this space is the Brutalist style sculpture that sits on top of the console table. The tiled stairs give the space a more Mediterranean touch, which contrasts with the Asian, modern, and contemporary pieces. What do you love about this space?

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's traditional elegance with a modern touch

This space is full of beautiful traditional and modern pieces. The surrealist painting over the fireplace works beautifully with the ornately decorated sofa. What makes this mix of styles work in one space is the colors. The red moves from the painting to the chair, to the pillows, to the flowers. The blue moves from the painting to the chair to the sofa to the lamp shade. What do you love about this space?

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's Asian eclectic mix

The furnishings in this space are very elegant, laid back, and have a great Asian pop to them. What gives this space its laid back feel is the low seating, sofa and pillows. The deep green walls and wall murals give the space a natural earthy feel. What do you love about this space?

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's 60s style glamour

The Warren Planter furnishings are the perfect pieces for a 60s inspired space. The painting is my favorite piece in this space. Without the painting the space would not tie together. The shag rug is great because, it gives the space a dose of texture and feels great under your feet as the floors are stone. What do you love about this space?

Person Of Influence: René Magritte

The Menaced Assassin

René Magritte was born in Belgium in 1898. Margritte's thought-provoking surrealist artwork became popular as it challenged observers perceptions of reality. (ABOVE) "The Menaced Assassin", is a great piece of art by Magritte. One of my biggest questions when looking at the piece is, who killed the women? With so many men standing around you really don't know. I assume it's either the man on the right with the net or the man on the left with the stick. (BELOW 1) The men falling from the sky in "Golconda", causes one to think about the meaning of reality. The building has little details and the men dressed in black, create a visually stimulating painting. (BELOW 2) I look at "Annunciation", as a building with multiple eyes watching. To me this painting says "buildings understand what is going on". (BELOW 3) I like the composition of The "Portrait of Stephy Langui". What are your thoughts about the painting? (BELOW 4) "Clear Ideas", is defiantly a thought provoking painting. I just keep thinking "what if" when I see this painting. (BELOW 4) "The Mysterious Barricades", is a cool piece. I wish there were trees that looked like this. I never thought about one big leaf with a stem resembling a tree, but in an odd way it makes sense. You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.
