The Light Bulb

http://www.selectism.com/news/2011/11/09/flat-light-bulb/
http://www.selectism.com/news/2011/11/09/flat-light-bulb/

I am in love with this flat light bulb designed by Joonhuyn Kim, because of its practical shape. No longer do you have to worry about your light bulb rolling off the table and shattering. This light bulb is a piece of art, not only does it do its job, but it adds beauty to a space. This light bulb would look great as a light fixture over a Kitchen Island, unfortunately it’s not in production!

This light bulb is a unique spin on the energy efficient bulb, it kind of reminds me of a brain.

This light bulb plays with our idea of proportion and scale.

Light Bulbs are essential to any space. They come in many different shapes and forms, why just choose your standard light bulb? Buy a light bulb that has a unique shape or form. However, if you choose to buy a unique bulb don't have a shade over it. Bulbs like the ones above are there own fixture and should be prominently displayed and not be competed with. You can add as little or as many light bulbs to your space as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

My Three Tips: To A Well Decorated Dining Room

http://www.delightfull.eu/en/
Tip #1: Buy A Light Fixture That Pop's
When you look at your dining room, what's the first thing that you look at? If you said table, than your light fixture ain't poppin'! Your light fixture should make one of the biggest statements in your dining space. A brilliant light fixture sets the tone in the space, and makes the space. It's sort of like walking out of the house without a jewlery piece or your iPhone. It's that little sparkle and shine that the space needs.

Tip #2: Spice Up Your Ceiling
The first post I posted on BAD in 2011 was about spicing up your ceiling. Two years later, I still strongly advocate making your fifth wall something to remember. Of course a white ceiling looks nice, but there's something about a ceiling that is painted stripes, or done in wood paneling that brings it all together. I'm sort of going through a bit of a mental dining room renovation of my dining room. I'm dreaming of a dark wood paneled ceiling, and walls, with a fantastic 60s Italian light fixture.

Tip #3: Make It Personal
So many dining rooms these days look like they came out of a catalog. Please! Make your dining room--you! Add a painting of your granny (well...), mix and match the seating, bring in some vintage lamps. Your home is an extension of your wardrobe. Let's put it this way. The apps on your phone are different than the apps on your friends phone. Your dining room should be different, it should be personal. What are your three tips?

(ABOVE) I love this light fixture. It's that statement piece that I'm writing about! It sort of looks like a musical instrument (trumpet?)

(1) In this dining space featured in lonny, the ceiling is original and funky. Just like BAD likes it! The wood molding that runs along the inner part of the ceiling brings texture into the space.

(2) The space belongs to fashion editor Kim Hersov. Why do I like this space? It's her! It doesn't look like it came out of a catalog. It's elegant, yet still has that rock-n-roll sprit. The candlesticks are from her grandmother and the chandelier is 60s Italian.

(3) How great are these floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookshelves? Bookshelves in the dining room are the ultimate personal touch. Looking at the books one reads is as personal as it gets. If you want to break up the rows and stacks of books, than stack your books in different directions, and add a few decorative objects in between.

Geometric Shapes In Concrete

© 109 Architectes

The strong clean design of the Université Saint-Joseph, in Lebanon, is designed by 109 Architects & Youseff Tohme. "This new campus takes a contextual approach, integrating physically, culturally, and historically with Beirut’s urban tissue. Conceptually an urban block with sculpted voids, the building’s hollow spaces define six autonomous blocks and construct multiple viewpoints across Beirut, connecting students to their dynamic setting. The voids also generate a street-level meeting space, which flows fluidly to the top floor in the form of a massive staircase. It concludes at a landscaped terrace overlooking the city. Light is a vital element in oriental architecture and one that shapes its style and identity; the campus exposes alternate light qualities through Moucharabieh-inspired perforations and a polycarbonate volume. Such manipulation presents a striking contrast in filtered light and luminescence. A stylized random-opening treatment is a snapshot of the Lebanese War, lending a poetic glimpse into the reality of destruction and violence." (ABOVE) The concrete stairs work beautifully with the structure and are both grand and command attention. Each window has its own unique shape, which gives the structure character. In addition, the varied window shapes, break the rigid lines of the structure. (BELOW) Another view of the structure, reveals different shapes, behind the shapes on the facade are windows.

Create This Look In Your Home:

Whether you buy these items or ones at a cheaper cost, the key to recreating the look of the Université Saint-Joseph in your home is to bring in patterns and shapes, and neutral colors. Patterns and shapes can be brought in through rugs, lighting and wallpaper. Neutral colors can be brought in through tabletops, sculptures and furniture. The 1990s "Sole" chair by Atelier Fornasetti is from Holly Johnson Antiques. The unique lithographically printed design, resembles the stairs and columns of the first photograph. The 1970s concrete plaster African side table by John Dickinson is from Coup d'Etat. The side table resembles the structure as a whole, because of the concrete material and clean form. The multi-arm chandelier is from Rewire. The chandelier resembles the shapes on the facade of the second photograph. The wires that connect the base to the lights resemble the white fence featured at the bottom of the second photograph. The mid 20th century vintage Swedish rug is by Marta Maas Fjetterstrom and from Nazmiyal. The clean pattern, color, and variety in shapes, all resemble the structure. How do you feel this look resembles the structure? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Color Story: Blue

http://toddalexanderromano.com/project/10/new-york-city-new-york

Many cultures regard the color blue as significant to their religious beliefs, as it brings peace and keeps bad spirits away. I find the color blue to be calming, however, too much blue in one space causes one to feel sadness and depression. (ABOVE) Blue makes a bold statement in this space. From the walls to the accessories, interior designer Todd Romano went all out. I like the bold choice, I find the large windows to make the room feel very light, despite the darker hue. (BELOW 1) Here blue is used as an accent color, in the lamp, curtains, wallpaper, etc. I like how interior designer Kimberly Ayres, had the flowers on the wallpaper transition from light blue to dark blue  (BELOW 2) I love the sudden hint of blue in the painting. The blue figure is impeccable, it strikes a strong yet delicate pose. In addition, the wood table supporting the objects creates a beautiful contrast with the walls. You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.
Using Blue with Other Colors (by About.com):
  • Mix the color of blue with green for a natural, watery palette.
  • Add gray for understated elegance. Light brown, tans, or beige are environmentally friendly color combinations.
  • Throw in a dash of blue to cool down a hot red or orange scheme.
  • Grab attention with the contrast of blue and yellow
  • Dark blue or navy with white is fresh, crisp, and nautical.
  • Red, white, and blue is a patriotic color trio for many countries, including the United States.
  • Use dark blue with metallic silver accents for an elegantly rich appearance.

Space's I'm Loving: Part XXIV

http://www.mybestdecor.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's brick tile walls, stainless steel hardware, and use of wood

This kitchen is the perfect mix of warmth and modern. Often times, a modern space can feel cold and uninviting. By using wood for the kitchen island, and floors, the kitchen feels inviting. The stainless steel hardware is my favorite element in this space. The handles have a noticeable weight to them, and the light bounces beautifully off them. Rather than having a generic tiled backdrop and upper cabinets, the designer of this space used a brick tile and forwent the upper cabinets. This aids in the modernity of the space. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's vanity, use of marble and glass

I could see this bathroom in my home! Couldn't you? This bathroom is all about that modern-vintage looking vanity. The clean lines, marble finish, and design is the perfect example of 70s-80s design. The use of marble in this space is shear perfection. The marble finish highlights its movement. The bathroom in my home stretches from the sink to the ceiling. Having a large mirror is perfect for getting ready and making the space appear larger. By dividing the mirror into sections it doesn't feel as overwhelming. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's vintage furniture and overall design

This space could fit right into a home located in the mountains or an apartment in New York City. The wood paneled walls give this effect. The furniture in this space falls on the more modern side. It' simple and functional. My favorite piece in this space is the bar. The circular shape and gold legs are very retro. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's use of color, and light fixture

This bright colored space have so much energy and life. I love the use of color in this space. It makes the space feel incredibly inviting and fun to be in. Through I'm not a fan of the sofa, I do like the armchairs. In a space like this a unique shaped sofa, something a bit more unique would be the perfect piece. The light fixture in this space calls all the attention. I love its unique design. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Spaces I'm Loving: Part V

http://www.kellywearstler.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's vintage furniture and accessories

Spaces that are designed with vintage furniture and accessories have a big place in my heart. Spaces that are designed by Kelly Wearstler have an even bigger place in my heart! The Master Bedroom of Wearstler's home is perfectly decorated with some of the greatest pieces. I am a huge fan of the ceiling fixture, and arm chairs. It's a glamourous space that doesn't feel overly designed. What do you love about this space?

http://www.architecturaldigest.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's staircase

The staircase is very sculptural and by being placed in the center of the space it draws attention. The staircase's middle landing is so cool as it's held by four pillars. The dark wood "pops" against the light walls and floors. What do you love about this space?

http://www.elledecor.com/
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's simple glamour

The Dinning chairs are clean, simple, and elegant. By not having much furniture in the space you can appreciate each piece. The fireplace is a gorgeous color and the clock is the perfect touch. The ceiling light fixture is seven pendants with each pendant attached by a maroon cord to the center, unique and cool! I only wish the cabinet to the left of the space had glass doors, so that you could admire the fine china. What do you love about this space?

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's clean contemporary design

The Friedeberg hand chairs are great statement pieces in this clean contemporary space. The placement of the sofa allows for the perimeter to be fully utilized. The lacquered Fig tree pot and coffee table really "pop" in this space. What do you love about this space?

Room Spotlight: Vintage Manhattan Glamour

http://www.robynmcclendon.com/2012/03/24/interior-inspiration/
Located in the Upper East Side, editor and stylist, Jackie Astier's NYC apartment is full of vintage finds. In the Master Bedroom, retro prints and plush materials make the apartment feel both personal and comfortable. I love the velvet headboard. It grounds the bed and works beautifully against the light purple walls. The gold mirrored legs of the coffee table, bring a fabulous shine to the space. A stone coffee table is perfect for any room, I prefer using onyx. This space has so many incredible details. From the light fixture to the fur rug, I could see myself spending a lot of time in this Master Bedroom. What do you love about this space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Space's I'm Loving: Part X

http://www.elledecor.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's bedding and accessories

Model Tamzin Greenhill designed her Manhattan Bedroom to reflect her personality.  I love the bedding, it's graphic and energetic without being an eyesore. I always love simple white sheets, with a great blanket. The pillows tie it all together. The accessories are great. I love the globe lamps and porthole mirrors. They're young, fresh and eclectic. What do you think of the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

http://www.elledecor.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's bohemian and eclectic feel

This Living Room is perfect for the cosmopolitan person. The space engulfs different periods and styles. I love the Vistosi chandelier it adds a little color and some Italian flair. I also love the chair to the right under the window. The soft blue color and brass finish is gorgeous. Since the space is painted white, it's important to have the furnishings bring in the color. What do you think of the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Why I Love This Space: I love this space's natural stone bathtub

The bathtub is the focal point of any Bathroom. This bathtub definitely impresses. I've never quite seen one like this. It's very natural looking. It honestly looks like a slap of stone that was rounded out. This bathtub makes the space. I'm not a fan of the sinks and cabinetry. It looks cheap looking, and doesn't have any personality. What do you think of the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

http://www.williamhefner.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's open feel layout, windows, and finishes

The center island in this Kitchen is wonderful. The light stone countertop, and brass finishes are simple and elegant. The brass, white, and blue make this space feel open. The windows also help to make the space feel open. Their large size add much light and brings the outdoors in. What do you think of the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

Space's I'm Loving: Part XXII

http://cdna.tid.al
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's beautiful stone work and clawfoot tub as well as light fixture

This bathroom is the perfect mix of elegant and modern. The space is all about the stone work. Because the stone is so intricate and detailed, the designer of this space, Rafael De Cardenas decided to leave everything else in the space simple and minimal. No bedazzled light fixture, paintings, cabinets, etc., just the bare necessities. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

http://www.architecturaldigest.com
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's furniture and accessories, as well as its fabulous location

Let me be honest--I'm not a huge fan of the space as a whole, but I'm incredibly in love with individual pieces in the space. From the symmetrical case pieces on either side of the windows, to the brilliant shell arm chairs to the wonderful modern artwork, many of the pieces in this space make big statements. From looking at the windows of this apartment, I'm guessing we're in New York overlooking Central Park. Can I please move in? Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follows rules, jut do.
Why I Love This Space: I love this vignette's unique pieces, as well as texturized fireplace mantel

I love a vignette. This vignette is too perfect. There is a nice mix of styles in this vignette. The fireplace is early 20th century, while the accessories have a bit more modernity to them. The brass ram is eclectic and makes a big statement is this vignette, it gives much needed height to the right side of the vignette. Without the brass ram, the vignette would be far more somber. Each piece in this vignette has a purpose and with out it the composition would not work. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

http://cdna.tid.al
Why I Love This Space: I love this space's overall design, art work, furnishings, and accessories

The overall design of this space is awesome. There is a fantastic balance between the furnishings, and the accessories in this space. Each piece complements the other. My favorite pieces in the space are the rug, arm chair in front of the desk, and desk itself. The rug adds a touch of femininity and a bit of an Eastern flare. The arm chair adds a shine to brings some interest into the space. The desk brings some rich color and elegance into the space. Do you like the space? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.
