'Non-Traditional' Photography

http://www.lorinix.net
New York City photographer Lori Nix describes herself as a 'non-traditional' photographer. It takes several months for Nix to construct each scene. According to Nix, much of her work focuses on danger, and disasters with a touch of humor. Nix's newest body of work "The City", featured below depicts either something natural or as a result of mankind that will empty the city of human inhabitants. (ABOVE) "Bounty", is an incredible photograph that shows the beauty and mystery of the world below the water. A ship, cars, and many other such things are found below. (BELOW 1) "Beauty Shop" is such a cool, unique photograph. One thing I don't think I'll ever see living in the NYC area is an empty salon! (BELOW 2) "The Subway", I love that everything inside the subway train is rusted from the ceiling to the walls, however, the seats still hold their vibrant color. They really pop against such a somber backdrop. (BELOW 3) "Library", is one of my favorites of Nix's work. I like to envision the library and how it once looked. I would actually plant those trees on purpose! They add a lot of character. What do you think of Lori Nix's work?

The Ball Is In Your Court

http://www.wardrobertsphoto.com/
"Courts" by photographer Ward Roberts is a wonderful series of images that Roberts took while traveling the globe. Roberts was inspired by both the architecture of the courts and the surrounding structures. (ABOVE) How beautiful are the industrial buildings surrounding this court? I love the ominous colors of the photograph. (BELOW 1) With views of the water, this court has a very LA type feel. I love the 'street' style wall surrounding the court. Kind of looks like waves painted on. (BELOW 2) How cool is the architecture surrounding this court? The orange fencing against the white structure really pop. (BELOW 3) What an interesting idea for court. At first glance it looks to be outside with a trellis ceiling. However if you look closely you can see the glass above the trellis and yellow windows around the court. Which court do you see yourself playing in?

Design Video: Celestial Lights

I'm a huge fan of the Celestial Lights that can be seen in the northern parts of Norway, Finland, and Sweden during different times of the year. The lights are just so beautiful and look 'space like'. This video is by Ole Salomonsen, who brilliantly captured the magic of the lights. Ole is a landscape photographer. What do you think?

Colors Of The Waves

http://www.flickr.com
Photographer David Orias's ocean images are shot just off the California coast. To achieve such wonderful depth and color, Orias relies on long shutter speeds and camera motion. He shot these photographs at dawn. Orias's images are photographed to show the world in a way our eyes cannot see. He's photographs have a painterly quality. (ABOVE) The bright orange, and yellow tones of the wave are phenomenal. The rich blue looks so luxurious. (BELOW 1) This wave looks like it's on fire. The bright yellow and orange pop out at you. (BELOW 2) Here the colors are more subdued. You can see a slight green undertone. This photograph is the ultimate balance of hot and cold. What do you think of Orias's photographs?

Playing With Photography

http://www.matthewbrandt.com
Los Angeles Artist and Photographer Matthew Brandt, has a way of manipulating original photographs to create a work of art. (ABOVE) "Kool Aid 1"  is Tropical Punch, Raspberry-Lemonade, Lemonade, Grape, Kool Aid on paper (multi-layered silk screen). The mixture is applied onto the falls in Yosemite. (BELOW 1) "American Lake, WA C1", this wonderful photograph of a lake is part of a series of Lakes and Reservoirs, in which Brandt soaks each photograph into the specific lake or reservoir that they represent. (BELOW 2) "Dexter Lake, Or 4" belongs to the same series as the photograph above. I love the colors to the left and right, looks as though fall is moving in. (BELOW 3) "Mary's Lake, MT 7" also belongs to the above series. I'm loving the texture of the photograph. It doesn't look like a photograph, more like a painting. What do you think of Matthew Brandt's work?

Nature Meets Design: The Jellyfish

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com

Nature has a strong influence on the way I design, because of its constant change and unexpected beauty. The Jellyfish Cotylorhiza is a magnificent creature. Its burst of color is both beautiful and unexpected. As it sits just beneath the surface of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon, it captures the magnificent light of the sunrise. As beautiful as it may look, the Jellyfish Cotylorhiza can give you a nasty bite. The photographer has beautifully curved the surface of the water as to mirror the curve of the Jellyfish's body. (BELOW) Whether you buy these items or ones at a cheaper cost, the key to recreating the style of the jellyfish in your home is to bring in purple and different shapes. Purple can be brought in through rugs, furniture and paint. Different shapes can be brought in through tabletops, sculptures and lighting. The impeccable 1960s, purple Vistosi discs chandelier is from Venfield. It resembles the tentacles of the Jellyfish. The purple 1980s Vladimir Kagan swivel  armchair is from Talisman. The curved form of the armchair resembles the curve of the purple tip of the Jellyfish's tentacles.  The pair of Beranek 1970s glass vases is from Mary Ann Lembo. The unique form of the vases resembles both the movement of the water and Jellyfish. The mid 20th century Scandinavian rug is from Nazmiyal. The rug and Jellyfish posse similar colors. What do you love about these pieces? You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.

When Landscape And Fashion Collide

http://www.josephford.net
Photographer Joseph Ford was able to take the wonderful landscapes of different countries, and the details of clothing and bring them together. The result? Pure genius, I'm getting one of those "Why didn't I think of that" moments. This series of photographs has received numerous awards and accolades. (ABOVE) The street blends right into the zipper of a printed jacket. The rocks of the landscape are reflected in the print on the jacket.

(1) Western landscape meets camouflage. Love how the train tracks blend right into the zipper. I love the earthy vibe of this composition.

2
(2) The building rooftops are reflected into geometric squares. The pops of green represent the trees, while the more neutral and lighter colors represent the rooftops.

(3) This photograph is dead on. I have absolutely nothing to say here. The simplicity of the street circle and watch are perfect. Guess I did!

(4) I love how the sand dunes move right into the sweater. The sweater has a fantastic orange wool that shows much depth and color.

Ice Skating in Holland

http://www.flickr.com
Photographer, Ben Visbeek, took these incredible photographs of people ice-skating and ice-yachting in North Holland. Here in NYC, I find myself praying for the warmer weather, but in North Holland, they're praying for the cold weather. When the weather does get cold enough, however, the people of Holland compete in ice-related sports such as skating and yachting. (ABOVE) When the water freezes, one may freely skate from one end to the other. (BELOW 1) The colors that surround you are absolutely breathtaking. (BELOW 2) As seen below, competitive ice-skating is a popular sport during this time. (BELOW 3) If competitive ice-skating isn't for you, then how about yachting? What do you think of Visbeek's work?

Yummy Sugary Treats Organized By Color

http://www.thesewoods.com
When I saw this food series photographed by Emily Blincoe I felt like I was in heaven. My body literally shut down and I jolted to the local supermarket. Well, not quite, but a boy can dream! The Austin based photographer grouped different candies based on their color, and photographed them. Isn't this series fun? (ABOVE) I'm going for the lollipop and the watermelon candy in the center. I think I want the Air Head too!

http://www.thesewoods.com

(1) The pink is super cute. I wonder what the animal ones in the center are? Any guesses? Definitely want some Starburst.
http://www.thesewoods.com
2
(2) I'll take the Tangerine candies, and the lollipop. Not a huge fan of orange Tick-Tac's. Which candy is calling you?
http://www.thesewoods.com

(3) I haven't had the banana candies in such a long time! Looking at this photograph brings back my childhood.

(4) I'm craving some apple Jolly Ranchers. I wonder what type of candy the soldiers are?
http://www.thesewoods.com
5
(5) Well I love the color. In case you haven't noticed, blue is a BAD favorite! I'll take the Toblerone, and the Black Jack gum. Are those Blow Pops?!
http://www.thesewoods.com

(6) I really like grape flavor, so basically anything here will do. I'm reaching for the Laffy Taffy as I write!
http://www.thesewoods.com
7
(7) Hmm. Not a big licorice fan, but I must say that I love this composition. I've never tried Mars Planets. Are they any good?
http://www.thesewoods.com
8
(8) OMG. Lindt, Ferrero Rocher, Twix, Reese's, Kisses, Hershey's, and gold coins! I literally can't contain my emotions right now!

(9) Underwear lollipop, haha. I want some Tic Tac's and some pretzels. What about for you? What do you think of Emily Blincoe's series?

Stairs Of Inspiration

Apartment Therapy
1
First, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving for those celebrating today. Stairs are everywhere. In your home, office buildings, airports, etc. The next five staircases inspired me and I hope they will inspire you to spruce up your stairs. (ABOVE) Color goes a long way here. Each step has a different color and a different energy. Located in Germany these stairs describe the relationship between human beings according to the photographer: terror & love, prosecution & trust, despair & hope, revenge & kiss, etc. (RIGHT 1) These stairs are very easy to replicate in your home. Here, the stair railings are in the blue color family, however, you can paint your railings in a different color family and it will create a similar affect. A clean coat of white paint on the stairs and your golden! (BELOW 2) These beautiful Moroccan inspired stairs are very cool. I love how the pattern of each riser is different, yet they all work in unity. I could see all these patterns used either on a ceiling or wall. (BELOW 3) These stairs have a very unique form. In addition, you could nail some awesome skateboard tricks! (BELOW 4) These stairs are more traditional. The unique walls of this foyer make the stairs pop. You can add as little or as much to your space as you want. Don't follow rules, just do.
